GGB Youngstown Launch – Tabletop Games and Stranger Things

We officially launched the Youngstown Chapter of Geek Girl Brunch on April 29, 2017. Our chapter’s beginning coincided with International Tabletop Day, so our theme celebrated both tabletop games and the show Stranger Things because it uses Dungeons and Dragons in its plot. We were generously hosted by Magic Tree Pub and Eatery in Boardman, Ohio, where they set up a side room and prepared a special menu for us.

Our Mistress of Crafts, Sam, made both the photoshoot backdrop as well as the gaming dice wine glass charms for each brunchette.

After an ice breaker where we introduced ourselves, talked about our favorite fandoms, and said our favorite female superhero, Mandy and Danamarie explained how they decided to start the chapter of Geek Girl Brunch in Youngstown. They had both attended the GGB events in Cleveland, but they thought they would want to start a chapter closer to home. Sam heard what they were doing and asked to be an officer as well. Brunch attendees mainly came through word-of-mouth as well as recruitment through social media.

After enjoying brunch, we decided to break out the table top games. We split into two groups. One group played Oregon Trail (though no one died of dysentery) and the other group played Codenames. We also had a contest in which brunchettes guessed how many dice were in a jar. We had really great prizes, including Funko Pops, games, and books.

Our month’s prize winners were Ev, Stephanie, and Heather!

Overall, our first brunch was a huge success! We bonded over our love of pets, games we’ve played, D&D characters we’ve created, and general geekiness. Many thanks to Magic Tree Eatery and Pub for hosting us and for our server Mercedes for coordinating everything for us. We will definitely use Magic Tree again for future events and highly recommend them for those in Youngstown and the surrounding area.
